Robinson broke the baseball color line in 1947 when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers’ signing of Robinson marked the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which had confined black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. (Photo: Robinson in 1954)
