And the Front-Runners Are… |
There are still three months to go until the Academy Awards, so obviously we don’t know who is actually going to win. But that won’t stop us from trying! And thanks to this week’s Golden Globes and Critics Choice nominations, plus a range of critics awards from the past week, we are getting a pretty clear picture of at least a few titles we’ll be hearing about nonstop between now and the Oscars on March 10. |
For example: It was already the year of Barbenheimer, and now we know that won’t stop as the calendar rolls into 2024. Barbie led the nominations tally at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, with Oppenheimer—as well as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon—nipping at Barbie’s sky-high heels. All three films now seem virtually locked in at the top of the best-picture race, alongside several other contenders that keep showing up on nomination lists—most notably American Fiction, The Holdovers, Maestro, and Poor Things. Does that mean best picture is locked in? Absolutely not. But at this point what was once a limitless pool of contenders now seems to be down to about 15 or so.
In the acting categories, however, there are many twists yet to come. Yes, Da’Vine Joy Randolph has been cleaning up critics awards for her supporting performance in The Holdovers, in addition to scoring Golden Globes and Critics Choice nominations. But with The Color Purple coming to theaters in time for Christmas, buzz is building for Danielle Brooks, not to mention Emily Blunt in the cultural phenomenon that is Oppenheimer, America Ferrera’s instantly iconic Barbie performance, Oscar winners Julianne Moore (May December) and Jodie Foster (Nyad), or even the groundswell of support that’s still out there for Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret? And that’s just one category!
For more on that, the true anyone-can-win-best-actor race, and the nail-biting tension in the best-director race, listen to this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, which includes deep dives on these nomination lists and all the other awards we’ve gotten in the past week. Hollywood may be preparing to wind down for the holidays, but there’s still a whole lot to discuss.
