Bridge Over Troubled Water Released
1970The Simon & Garfunkel album Bridge Over Troubled Water is released, with the title track simultaneously issued as a single.
The duo thought the upbeat singalong "Cecilia" would be the first single, but their label boss Clive Davis insisted it be the title track, a nearly 5-minute plaintive ballad with gospel textures. It was the right call. Both the single and the album shoot to #1 in America, and make nests there, with the album spending 10 weeks at the top spot and the single staying for six. They sweep the Grammy Awards, winning for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album sells over 25 million copies, but is the last one recorded by the duo, who split soon after. Many of the songs deal with the duo's long friendship and the fracture of their musical relationship: "The Only Living Boy In New York" was written by Simon to express his loneliness after Garfunkel spent months away making a movie. The song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" survives hundreds of dubious cover versions, even into the American Idol era, where it becomes Clay Aiken's showstopper. Some of the more successful renditions include those by Aretha Franklin, Buck Owens, and a duet by Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli.
