May Babu Frik Be With You
Another May 4 has arrived, which means it’s time to observe Star Wars Day—the only celebration that appeals equally to fans of a galaxy far, far away and dad joke devotees. (May the Fourth be with you. Get it?!) To honor the occasion, resident Jedi Anthony Breznican had a revealing chat with Shirley Henderson, the puppeteer and voice performer behind The Rise of Skywalker’s most endearing new creation: Babu Frik, the little alien tinkerer who captured hearts and minds when the franchise’s last entry debuted in December. Henderson opened up about the little guy’s origins, as well as her imagined backstory for the character—which includes a secret heartache: “Beyond the film, Babu has lived a life. Somewhere out there is a lost love. He thinks about her sometimes when he sits down in his workshop and lets his thoughts drift away. That’s what I think, anyway.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Tara Ariano recommends films and TV series to stream if you’re itching for some home-renovation inspiration; Dan Adler takes us inside A24’s big prop auction; Laura Regensdorf chats with Ilana Glazer, who’s using her stressed-out energy to push for a fair 2020 election; and Yohana Desta investigates one of the most intriguing tidbits dramatized on Netflix’s Hollywood: Did Tallulah Bankhead and Hattie McDaniel really have an affair?
