ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On April 26, 1954, polio vaccine trials begin at an elementary school in McLean, Virginia. About 1.8 million children in the United States, Canada and Finland participate in the trials and, the following year, researchers declare the vaccine safe and effective. The Salk polio vaccine becomes a standard childhood immunization in America, eventually almost completely wiping out the highly contagious disease in the Western Hemisphere. |
