It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Reunited season!
I’m Rebecca Ford, and as Oscar voting nears, we’re posting a handful of Reunited features that are really capturing some of this year’s contenders in their best, warmest light. For this series, I get two Oscar hopefuls together for a conversation, but the twist is that they’ve previously worked together before—and usually they’re good friends.
We kicked things off with Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult, who starred in About a Boy more than two decades ago. Hoult was just 11 at the time, and revealed that even back then he was aware of the uphill battle it can be for a child actor. “I was very aware as a kid of the fact that child actors don’t make it as adult actors very frequently. So there was also this awareness of ‘maybe this isn’t going to work out’—which was quite a strange feeling to take on that young,” he says. But it did work out, and now he’s had one of his busiest years yet, starring in The Order, Juror #2, and Nosferatu. Hoult also credits Grant, who stars in the smart horror film Heretic this year, for giving him a bit of his swagger. “It’s not an impression of you, but I think there are little things occasionally that are almost my interpretation of how you would do it,” he tells Grant.
Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes also say their time working together, on 1999’s The End of the Affair, left a lasting impression. They’ve both gone on to varied and prolific careers—Moore starred in Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door and Fiennes in Conclave this year—and they both have an incredible ability to deliver powerful emotion with just the simplest of looks. Also, they both like to have fun and laugh while working. “Often when people talk about acting, they talk about how hard it is and how brave we are and all this kind of stuff. And I’m like, Is it really?” says Moore. “I think it’s joyful. It can be joyful.”
Finally, today we posted a conversation with Amy Adams and Denis Villeneuve, who looked back on why Arrival was like “flirting with disaster.” They also discuss their bold projects this year, Adams starring in Nightbitch and Villeneuve returning to Arrakis for Dune: Part Two. Plus, they reveal Villeneuve’s go-to karaoke song!
I learn a lot about acting, filmmaking, Hollywood, and awards season from moderating these conversations, and I find them uniquely revealing because of the relationship the pairs have with each other. We’ll have a couple more coming in the next few days. I’ll even be moderating our first-ever Reunited Live this Thursday in London with Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet—so be sure to check back in to read all about it.
