Can the Oscars Be Decided at the Box Office? |
Despite what you might hear from naysayers who are convinced the Oscars are out of touch with reality, it’s not actually that rare for some of the year’s top box office earners to be in the best-picture race. The two biggest films of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, both earned best-picture nominations; 2020 best-picture nominees Joker, 1917, and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood were all among 2019’s top grossers. |

On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, the team answers a question from listener Matt, who wonders if the global box office performance of Killers of the Flower Moon—$156 million worldwide—might be a hindrance. Meanwhile, Poor Things and American Fiction are surging in theaters at just the right moment for Oscar voting, which could give them the attention they need. Even a relatively tiny film like The Zone of Interest, which has made $7.3 million worldwide, is well on its way to being the most successful film director Jonathan Glazer has ever released in the US. Not every best-picture contender can be Barbie, but box office success can be measured in many different ways.
