Hard as it can be to limit a list of the year’s best films to 10, much less to rank them in order, Vanity Fair’s film critic Richard Lawson was once again up to the challenge this year. In his list of the top 10 films of 2022 he shines a light on everything from a wistful children’s film (it “speaks to little ones on their level while gently encouraging them to think and feel more expansively about their lives and the life of the world around them”) to a “glorious riot” of an Oscar contender. There will be many top 10 lists this time of year—and many more to come from VF too—but Richard’s list is an excellent place to start for some end-of-year catch-up, and some discoveries you might not have even realized you missed.
Elsewhere in HWD, Rebecca Ford talks to Maria Bello, who opens up for the first time about her work on The Woman King, which began when she pitched the film idea to Viola Davis onstage at an awards show. Author Louise Pennyexplains why she finally allowed a television adaptation of her crime novels starring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who will be played by Alfred Molina in the new Prime Video series Three Pines. And from the December/January issue of VF,Emily Jane Fox dives deep on Hollywood’s new weight-loss craze, Ozempic, the drug initially marketed to diabetics that can cost up to $1,500 a month—but plenty of insiders swear it’s worth it.
