Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' is the First Album to Sell More Vinyl Copies Than CD Since the '80s
Since 1987, to be precise.
Taylor Swift is no stranger to breaking records in mainstream music, and her latest album "Midnights" has continued the trend, as it occupied all spots on Billboard's Top 10 upon release.
Now, the popstar has unlocked yet another achievement, as her 10th record is the first effort to sell more vinyl copies than CDs since the 1980's.
According to NME, Swift's "Midnights" has sold close to 800,000 copies on vinyl, making it the fastest-selling vinyl of the century, and the only record to outsell its CD counterpart since 1987.
That was the year that saw Michael Jackson's "Bad", and Guns N' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" as its best-selling releases, together with the soundtrack to "Dirty Dancing".
Vinyl as a whole is growing with each year, and it's predicted to sell over 5.5 million LPs by the end of the year, which marks the 15th consecutive growing year for the model.
CEO of the Entertainment Retailers Association, Kim Bayley, made the following statement on this trend:
"After the CD came along and pretty much wiped out the vinyl business, few of us would have believed a renaissance like this was possible."
"Will the CD disappear? Of course, its prospects don't look good right now, but it offers a permanence and robustness, and quality which is unique. Given how wrong we were about vinyl, it would be foolish to write off the CD for ever."
