“It Was Shattering”
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was a cultural juggernaut in 2016, sweeping up audiences, critics, and the TV Academy alike. Its second successor, Impeachment: American Crime Story, faced a much more muted reception—which is why writer Sarah Burgess and star Sarah Paulson were floored when they were each nominated for Emmys for their work on the show. “I am changed by the experience, in some ways hardened by it—which is probably necessary,” Burgess tells David Canfield in a candid and wide-ranging conversation about the show and its delayed embrace. Paulson, who was also on the Zoom, agrees: Coming off of Impeachment, she says, she took a year off to “reassess the kind of work I want to do.”
