No More Mr. Nice Guy

After a career playing gentle souls like the tech simp in Ex Machina and the eldest Weasley brother in the Harry Potterseries—and, okay, a wicked general in the latest Star Warstrilogy—Domhnall Gleeson found himself stretching for the new FX on Hulu series The Patient. The show, the premiere of which is now available, stars Gleeson as a serial killer who kidnaps a therapist (Steve Carell), hoping that the doctor can help him overcome his murderous impulses. As the titular patient, though, Gleeson also felt compelled to create a character who’s different from your typical criminal mastermind. On Little Gold Men this week, the Irish actor talks to David Canfield about what he’s looking for at this point in his career, and figuring out what he had in common with a killer.

Elsewhere in HWD, Rachel Williams sues Netflix for making her look “horrible” in Inventing Anna; Chris Rock says he declined to host the Oscars again, post-slap; filming on a new Natalie Portman series hits an unusual snag; and we laud the best-dressed celebrities at Sunday’s Video Music Awards.
