TV Shines This Summer
Looking to debut their shows in time to qualify for the Emmys, the streamers and networks may have done a disservice not just to viewers but to their own series. As David Canfieldwrites today, there was such a flood of worthy TV to try to keep track of, that viewers “had three heavy true-crime dramas to sample simultaneously, as well as weekly drops of programs toplined by Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jon Bernthal, Claire Foy, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Moss, Miles Teller, Vanessa Bayer.” Now that the Emmy window has closed, new series will have time to breathe and find audiences. And, as Canfield tells us, there are already three stand-out summer shows that deserve our full attention: The Bear, The Old Man, and This Is Going to Hurt. We’ve got everything you need to know about the promising new season.
Elsewhere in Hollywood today, we dive into the making of one great monologue and how beautifully it illuminates the emotional stakes of the restaurant dramedy The Bear; Alanna Nash weighs in on what Elvis gets right, as well as wrong, about Colonel Tom Parker; the director of the terrific new documentary Bitterbrush talks about filming on horseback and in a blizzard, among other challenges; and Julia Roberts and George Clooney return to rom-coms after a long hiatus.
