Bill Clinton Plays Sax On Arsenio
1992Arkansas governor Bill Clinton, campaigning for US president, makes a whistle stop on The Arsenio Hall Show, where he plays the Elvis Presley hit "Heartbreak Hotel" on the saxophone to a cheering, youthful audience. The appearance is later seen as the definitive moment when Clinton captured the trust and support of young voters, and locked the election on charisma points.
Much of Clinton's sit-down with Hall deals with the importance of voting, and with race relations - just a month earlier, riots broke out in Los Angeles after white police officers were found not guilty in the beating of black motorist Rodney King. Clinton comes off as understanding and in touch. "You've got millions of people in this country today that just don't feel connected to the live they want to live," he tells the host. Later in the show, Clinton's wife, Hillary, joins them. "Through all this controversy, have you ever found yourselves at home, fighting," he asks the couple, referring to allegations that Bill had an affair. Her reply: "No. Not about anything important." The interview goes over well with the audience, but it's the image of Clinton in sunglasses blowing an impressive saxophone that endures. He goes on to win the election, defeating incumbent George H. W. Bush to become president, thanks in large part to the youth vote. The Arsenio Hall appearance turns out to be a defining moment in his campaign and a cultural touchstone. Among the many references that follow, the opening theme to the WB Network cartoon Animaniacs includes the line, "While Bill Clinton plays the sax" at the start of every episode.
