Let’s Hear It for The Boys
Looking for a TV series that speaks to our current uncertain moment, with dark humor and cynicism to spare? Look no further than the second season of Amazon’s comic book adaptation The Boys, writes Sonia Saraiya. If you missed this under-the-radar series last year, you might benefit first from a bit of context: “The show’s world is much like our own, except that the superheroes who star in blockbuster movies aren’t imaginary. They are celebrities, and actors too—but their primary paychecks come from fighting crime on behalf of conglomerate Vought Industries,” she explains. “Even in the midst of stunning brutality, the show has a sardonic sense of humor that keeps the story crackling. Each season drags the viewer through bleak carnage, before tying the story off with a twist that seems to rejigger the stakes just enough to make success possible.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Erin Vanderhoof wonders whether the against-all-odds success of this year’s VMAs should change the way we hold awards shows; Christopher Rosen charts Tenet’s long and winding trip to theaters; Anthony Breznicanfollows an effort to replace a Confederate monument with a statue of the late Chadwick Boseman; and embattled Ellenproducer Andy Lassner speaks.
