On Aug 28, 1774, St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, is born Elizabeth Ann Bayley in New York City. She founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first community for religious women established in the United States. She also began St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School, which helped establish Catholic education in the U.S. For her efforts, she would become the first person born in what would become the U.S. to be made a saint. She died in 1821, was beatified in 1963 and canonized in 1975. Seton Hall University in New Jersey is named after “Mother Seton.” |
