ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY On Aug. 25, 1950, President Harry S. Truman issues an executive order putting the U.S. Army in control of the nation’s railroads. The move came in the face of an imminent strike by two enormous unions, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors. Truman, who had just ordered troops to Korea, cited the railroads as crucial for national defense. The two sides took 21 months to reach an agreement.
