The Republican Party’s foreign policy agenda has been almost entirely shaped in the past four years by President Donald Trump’s approach to international relations, including new trade deals, skepticism of international organizations and calls to reduce U.S. troop deployments overseas, observers say.

On Aug. 25, 1950, President Harry S. Truman issues an executive order putting the U.S. Army in control of the nation’s railroads. The move came in the face of an imminent strike by two enormous unions, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors. Truman, who had just ordered troops to Korea, cited the railroads as crucial for national defense. The two sides took 21 months to reach an agreement.
