Two Americans involved in a teaching exchange program in China have been detained near Shanghai for allegedly “illegally moving people across borders.”

On October 17, 1989, San Francisco is rocked by the biggest earthquake since 1906. The quake came moments before game three of baseball’s World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, held at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Millions of Americans saw it on live television. The quake, a magnitude 6.9, killed 63, injured thousands and caused damage to more than 100,000 buildings.
The United States is requiring all Chinese diplomats in the country and Chinese officials traveling to the U.S. on official business to give the State Department advance notice of meetings with local, state and federal officials, as well as educational and research institutions.
