1 big thing: Winter waiting game

The long-running snow drought from Washington to Boston could end — or at least ease — as a winter storm develops and moves across the region this weekend, Axios extreme weather expert Andrew Freedman writes.

  • Why it matters: In a typical winter, a storm of this magnitude wouldn't be major weather news. But much of the region hasn't seen more than an inch or two of snow in as long as two years.

What's happening: The New York to Boston corridor has a good shot of receiving significant, plowable snowfall Saturday afternoon into Sunday — though this isn't a blockbuster storm.

  • Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston stand the best chance of seeing 3 to 6 inches of snow or more out of this storm.
  • Major snow isn't expected to fall in D.C., Baltimore or Philadelphia.

🔎 Between the lines: In New York City, Central Park last saw an inch of snow in February 2022.

  • Boston's biggest snowstorm last winter was just 3.5 inches.

👀 What we're watching: El Niño winters can bring significant East Coast snowstorms, particularly across the mid-Atlantic. So if this one is mostly a rain event, there may be more chances of snow ahead.

2. 🚨Bomb threats hit state capitols

Capitol buildings in at least nine states were put on lockdown or forced to evacuate today after receiving bomb threats, Axios' Ivana Saric writes.

  • Why it matters: Threats against public officials at various levels of government have surged in recent years.

Bomb threats were sent out in a "mass email" to multiple secretaries of state and legislative offices around the country, a spokesperson for Kentucky's secretary of state told Axios.

  • Other states that received bomb threats include Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi and Montana.

Between the lines: A spate of swatting calls targeted senators and members of Congress over the holidays.

The Lancashire heeler — energetic, agile and obedient — became the American Kennel Club's newest accepted dog breed today, Axios' April Rubin writes.

  • The breed hails from the U.K. and dates back to 17th-century crossbreeding.

The AKC recognizes 201 breeds, which can compete at events like the Westminster Kennel Club show.
