Happy New Year! The start of 2024 means that we have landed at the beginning of the awards-show-palooza, with major and minor events happening every week and weekend. In just the next few days we have the Golden Globes, the Governors Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards Nominee Brunch, and the AFI Luncheon—not to mention the start of Oscar nominations voting on January 11.
I’m Rebecca Ford, and over here at Awards Insider we’ll have all eyes on the Globes this weekend. As we make clear in our predictions post, the voting body for the Globes has changed significantly over the past two years, tripling its membership, and making us all very curious how they’ll choose to vote this year. They’ve also added the eyebrow-raising “cinematic achievement” category, which is intended to highlight the biggest box office movies—but is it also in any way about being “the best”? We’ll have to wait and see.
Sure, the Globes—which will be hosted by Jo Koy, who recently spoke to Awards Insider about taking on the last-minute gig—are still considered a sort of odd duck awards show due to the questionable makeup of its voting body, there’s no denying the value of a winner’s acceptance speech, broadcast across the land just before Oscar voting opens. Especially this year, when so many actors were absent from the awards season trail for several months due to the actors strike, that moment in the spotlight could really be key. I think back to last year when Ke Huy Quan won over that star-studded room with his emotional acceptance speech that cemented his narrative and paved the way for his Oscar win. Whose acceptance speech will we be talking about the next morning this year?
Speaking of star-studded rooms, this busy month of awards shows means that lots of friends and former costars will be running into each other in their hotel ballrooms. One of my favorite aspects of awards season is seeing past collaborators reunited, which was the inspiration for Vanity Fair’s Reunited series, which launched this week. Every season, we bring together two talents who have previously worked together for revealing conversations about craft and the industry. This year, I was lucky enough to talk to Rosamund Pike and Chris Messina, two supporting-actor heavyweights who were incredibly honest about their careers and the craft; Eric Rothand Michael Mann, who had been friends for decades since making The Insider; Jason Schwartzman and Gael García Bernal, who had surprising parallels in their most recent work; and Ava DuVernay and Colman Domingo who had a lot to say about breaking barriers and the more challenging aspects of the awards season race.
Every year, I learn a lot from these conversations, which you can find here (we’ll have one more major pairing publishing Monday). These talented artists have much more to say when it comes to their work—and starting this weekend we’ll get to hear from some of them from the glittery stages as they accept their golden statuettes.
