It’s a common, cynical refrain in awards season to accuse people of voting for someone just because they want to hear them give a speech. Sure, cynics can argue that star power can be too powerful for televised awards shows like the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, and it’s hard for anyone to argue that the most memorable moments often result from someone with a statuette in their hand and something to say. But awards voters, like everyone else, vote with their hearts. If they want to hear someone give a speech, it’s because that person did work that earned them a spot on that stage in the first place. |
