A Golden Globes Cinderella Story |
With an expanded voting body and a seeming mandate to more closely match the season’s consensus awards favorites, the Golden Globes don’t offer quite the wealth of surprises they did a little more than a decade ago, when nominations for films like The Tourist and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen made you marvel at their ability to zig instead of zag. But in this year’s crop of nominees there was one genuine, thrilling surprise: Alma Pöysti, nominated in best actress in a musical or comedy for the celebrated Finnish film Fallen Leaves. |
A deadpan romantic comedy that runs a brisk 81 minutes, Fallen Leaves doesn’t really fit the stereotype of the breakthrough European film—it’s funny and spry, and features a dog performance so good it won a prize at Cannes. (The grand jury Palm Dog, naturally.) On the podcast, Pöysti explains how Kaurismäki’s direction helped her build a sweet romantic connection with costar Jussi Vatanen, revealing the surprising advice he had for both of them: “Don’t act.”
