The State of the Superhero Movie |
Fast as its titular hero may be, The Flash couldn’t outrun trouble at the box office this weekend: DC’s would-be tentpole earned just $55 million, a disappointing sum. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been cleaning up globally, staying strong in its third week in theaters. What does it all mean? Richard Lawson ponders that very question, noting that while The Flash has the same problems that have plagued too many recent live-action superhero movies, its counterpart manages to do something genuinely new: “Spider-Verse boldly endeavors to make idiosyncratic art instead,” he writes. “In doing so, the film more than sells the idea that the story it’s telling is fresh and vital rather than yet another multidimensional romp through the wonderful world of branding.” |
