All’s Fair in Love and War
Vanity Fair’s epic Old Hollywood podcast, Love Is a Crime, draws to a close today, as hosts Karina Longworth and Vanessa Hope wrap the long, twisty story of Joan Bennett and Walter Wanger. The episode follows Bennett’s final years, from a tumultuous marriage with David Wilde to production on her last major hit, Suspiria. Through it all, the onetime film noir icon maintained a sense of reinvention. Her legacy, says Hope—Bennett and Wanger’s granddaughter—may be best summed up by Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns. “It’s not about circus clowns,” says Hope. “It’s about what fools we are in love and life, and I think Joan must have had a very deep and profound sense of that.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Britt Hennemuth previews Alana Haim’s acting debut, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s mysterious Licorice Pizza; David Canfield catches up with Only Murders in the Building’s true culprit; Meghan McCain opens up about leaving The View; and Jordan Klepper explores an event spookier than any Halloween party: a Trump rally.
