Patricia Arquette Leads the Emmy Pack
Say hello to Patricia Arquette, cover star of Vanity Fair’s latest Special Awards Issue—a deep dive into the incipient 2019 Emmy race, which could very well recognize the Oscar winner for two different but equally gripping performances. Arquette gets candid with Joy Press in our cover story about nabbing the best roles of her career in her 50s: “I feel like I wanted these kind of parts all my life, but there just wasn’t the option,” she tells Press. Arquette never really felt comfortable playing the ingénue, as young actresses are generally required to; when a boy she went to school with told her that if she fixed her crooked teeth, she could pose for Playboy, “I was like, ‘Why would I want to be in Playboy? … I am not going to be some Barbie. I’m going to be the wolf girl, the vampire girl,’ ” Arquette says. “I already thought, I don’t look like I am inside. My outside doesn’t fit my inside.” With time, it seems, that has changed. “I really want to have the conversation of who’s allowed to be sexual, who’s allowed to be sexy,” she tells Press. “Who defines what that is? What are you supposed to look like? What age are you supposed to be and who gets to say that’s the only story of the human race, you know?”
