ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth is shot to death by Union troops twelve days after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. After shooting Lincoln, Booth jumped from Lincoln’s box seat onto the stage, breaking his leg. He and his accomplice, David Herold, eventually made it to Virginia and received assistance from Confederate sympathizers. The two were eventually cornered in a barn on a farm owned by Richard Garrett. Herold surrendered, but Booth would not. Soldiers lit the barn on fire to flush him out, but he was shot while still inside. |
