Lose $100, get $14 in aid:  Most years, the rolling fields of soybeans on Fred Grieder’s Illinois farm would be an indicator of a promising and profitable fall harvest. But this year tariffs are turning away potential customers overseas, and Grieder estimates he could lose around $100 an acre if the trade war continues.Even with the Trump administration’s $12 billion aid package to help farmers, Grieder faces massive losses and a bitter harvest.

On August 2, 1790, the first US Census is conducted under the direction of Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. The census classifies and counts the number of people in every household including white males 16 years and older to ‘assess the country’s industrial and military potential.’ Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are skeptical about the final count of 3.9 million because they think the actual number of US inhabitants is much higher. (Photo: President George Washington (bottom) and Vice President John Adams (center left) signed the 1790 census act on March 1, 1790.)

Trump administration initiatives are curbing legal immigration on multiple fronts , according to immigration attorneys who spoke to VOA. US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has started denying petitions for people hoping to change their status from student visas to work visas. The changes could be a result of USCIS efforts to  carry out President Trump’s ‘Buy American, Hire American’ executive order.
