Libyan rebel fighter Jaad Jumaa Hashmi cranks up the volume on his pickup truck's stereo when he heads into battle against Moammar Gadhafi's forces.
A musician himself, he looks for inspiration from a growing cadre of amateur rappers whose powerful songs have helped define the revolution.
The music captures the anger and frustration young Libyans feel at decades of repressive rule under Gadhafi, driving the 27-year-old Hashmi forward even though the heavy machine gun bolted on the back of his truck — and other weapons in the rebel arsenal — are no match for Gadhafi's heavy artillery.
"It captures the youths' quest for freedom and a decent life and gives us motivation," Hashmi said as he sat in his truck on the outskirts of the front line city of Ajdabiya. He was listening to "Youth of the Revolution," which the rap group Music Masters wrote just days after the uprising began in mid-February.
"Moammar, get out, get out, game over! I'm a big, big soldier!" sang 20-year-old Milad Faraway, who started Music Masters with his friend and neighbor, 22-year-old Mohammed Madani, at the end of 2010.
Rather than grabbing AK-47s and heading to the front line with other rebels to fight Gadhafi's forces, Faraway and Madani stayed in Benghazi, the de facto capital of rebel-held eastern Libya, and picked up a microphone.
The freewheeling rap scene developing in Benghazi indicates how much has changed in eastern Libya in the past two months with a growing cadre of amateur rappers whose powerful songs have helped define the revolution, capturing the anger and frustration young Libyans feel at decades of repressive rule under Moammar Gadhafi.
"Everyone has his own way of fighting, and my weapon is art," said Faraway, a geology student, during a recent recording session in a small room on the fourth floor of an aging apartment building in downtown Benghazi. The room was equipped with little more than a microphone, stereo and computer.
The room was decorated with a large red, black and green rebel flag and a framed photo of the Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Faraway and Madani smoked cigarettes and sipped steaming glasses of sweet tea as they recorded lyrics for their latest song, a tribute to cities caught up in the revolution.
The freewheeling rap scene developing in Benghazi indicates how much has changed in eastern Libya in the past two months. Speaking out against Gadhafi before the rebellion used to mean prison and maybe even death. And rap, like other forms of Western culture, was despised by Gadhafi, who burned foreign musical instruments and books after he seized power in 1969.
"I always wanted to talk about Gadhafi's mistakes and crimes, but we never had the chance for free speech," said Madani, who is the son of a famous local singer in Benghazi and works part-time in his family's cell phone and car parts shops. "All you could talk about was how good Gadhafi's revolution was."
Faraway, who like many rappers in Benghazi is known by his nickname, "Dark Man," and Madani, aka "Madani Lion," form the core of Music Masters, but the composition of the group has changed over time. One of the rappers quit just after the uprising started because he feared being targeted by Gadhafi's thugs, Madani said.
Many of the songs that Music Masters and other groups have recorded in the past two months feature rapid fire lyrics reminiscent of Eminem. The lyrics ridicule Gadhafi and lambast him for his treatment of the country in the past four decades.

BECKHAM AND ELTON JOHN TO ATTEND ROYAL WEDDING
LONDON April 23, 2011
David Beckham, Elton John and Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson will mingle with dozens of royal guests at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding, according to an official guest list released Saturday that includes one uncomfortable presence — the Bahraini crown prince accused of a brutal crackdown on protesters.
St. James's Palace also released the seating plan at Westminster Abbey, which showed that relatives of William's mother Princess Diana are sitting across the aisle from the royal family, joining the Middletons in an exception to the traditional division of a church into a bride's side and groom's side.
There was no explanation of the seating arrangement, but the Spencers have not had a good relationship with the royal family, especially after Diana's brother Charles Spencer attacked the royals during a speech at her 1997 funeral.
More than 46 foreign royals are seated behind the British royals. They include Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, an invitation that could prove awkward in light of his government's rough treatment of mainly Shiite pro-democracy protesters.
Some human rights campaigners have started to petition Foreign Secretary William Hague to revoke the invitation, saying the prince should not be allowed to attend the occasion. At least 30 people have died in Bahrain since mid-February, including four who died while in official custody, and many well-known activists and lawyers have been imprisoned.
Other foreign royals who are attending include those from Denmark, Norway, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Morocco. Only a handful of celebrities are invited, including the Beckhams, director Guy Ritchie, soul singer Joss Stone, and Atkinson — a close friend of William's father Prince Charles.
Although about 1,900 guests have been invited to the couple's wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey, half of them will sit in the section of the abbey where views of the altar are restricted, and they will have to rely upon video screens to follow the service.
Queen Elizabeth II and other royal family members will sit in the front row across the aisle from Middleton's parents and brother James. They will be closest to the abbey's sanctuary, where William and his bride will stand.
Foreign dignitaries, the Middletons' family friends, British government and defense officials, families of British soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, William's army colleagues, and people who work for William's charities will be seated around the abbey.
Palace officials said that only crowned heads of states are traditionally invited to royal weddings, and that political leaders who are not from the 54-member Commonwealth of nations, such as President Barack Obama or French President Nicolas Sarkozy, weren't sent invitations.
About 600 of the guests will then attend a champagne and canapes reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the queen.

FINIAN'S RAINBOW
Finian's Rainbow
Warner Bros. / Seven Arts, 1968, Color, 145 minutes, ****
Released October, 1968
Originally a stage production in 1947, this story's anit-racism theme was so far ahead of its time that it was more than twenty years before it came to the screen. Irishman Finian (Fred Astaire) and his daughter Sharon (Petula Clark) come to the United States with a pot of gold "borrowed" from one of the "little people" - a leprechaun played by Tommy Steele. Finian believes burying the pot in the rich American soil will cause it to grow, and then he can return the original amount of gold to the leprechaun.
Finian and Sharon, after wandering the country, settle in the small southern community of Rainbow Valley, which unbeknownst to Finian, is directly in the path of a proposed river dam project. Woody (Don Francks) and Howard (Al Freeman, Jr.) have been working to develop a strain of mentholated tobacco so that the small community will have a better means of support. But, the local Senator (Keenan Wynn) is determined to take the land away from the people who live there in order to complete his dam project, from which he stands to profit personally.
Because it is leprechaun gold, those who make a wish in the vicinity of the pot of gold will be granted their wish. But the pot can only fulfill three wishes before its gold is turned to dross. When the Senator visits the village to try to force the people out of their homes by condemning the land, his plans are foiled by Woody and Finian. The Senator loses his temper and reveals his racial prejudice - many of the people who live in the village are black. Outraged, Sharon wishes she could turn the senator black so he could understand first-hand how he has hurt the black people of the village. Not realizing that she is close to the pot of gold, which Finian has hidden in the area - presto! - the senator becomes a black man! Humiliated, he rushes off into the woods to hide. When the senator is missed by his associates, the local law officials investigate and soon bring counts of witchcraft against Sharon. They lock her in a barn, which they plan to burn unless Sharon turns the Senator white again before morning.
Meanwhile the Senator, after wandering around the forest for a day or so, meets a quartet of black musicians (Avon Long, Jester Hairston and Roy Glenn). They have just lost one of their number, so the Senator joins the group as the new fourth man and has a great time. By the time he returns to the village, he has become best of friends with the members of the singing group and he has seen the errors in his ways. Now Finian must use the last wish in the pot to turn the Senator white again in order to save the life of his daughter. After a close-call, all ends happily and Woody and Sharon are married. Having fulfilled his mission, Finian - ever the wanderer - sets off for greener pastures, dancing out of the village and over the hill as the townspeople sing farewell. This scene is especially poignant in retrospect, since it was to be the last time Fred Astaire would ever dance in a movie musical.
the film is lots of fun - lighthearted and at times quite comical, as well as deftly delivering a message in a delicate manner. The music by Arlen and Harburg is wonderful! Highlights include "Look to the Rainbow," "How Are Things in Glocca Morra," "If This Isn't Love," "That Old Devil Moon" and "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love." In spite of Fred's age (he was nearly 70), he dances a wonderful number on top of shipping crates in the production number, "When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich." It's a great film! Required watching for any musical fan!!

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Fiddler on the Roof
United Artists, 1971, Color, 180 minutes, ****
Released November 1971
"An outstanding accomplishment in every category" (Boxoffice), this lavishly produced and critically acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the [20th] century czarist Russia.
Nomindated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director and featuring such classic songs as "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset," Fiddler on the Roof is a universal story of hope, love and acceptance - "a stunning, joyful and jubilant" (New York Daily News) musical masterpiece.
Though the story concentrates on the plight of Jewish people in a small Russian village, it has overtones of the struggle all of us face trying to understand the meaning of life and to cope with a world that begins to pass us by as we grow older. Beautiful cinemetography, wonderful acting and beautiful music. Musical highlights include Topol's "If I Were a Rich Man," Frey's "Miracle of Miracles," and the fabulous "Sunrise, Sunset." Not to be missed!
