We Need to Talk About Ezra

What a long, strange journey it’s been for Ezra Miller. Since the actor’s breakthrough roles in We Need to Talk About Kevinand The Perks of Being a Wallflower a decade ago, they’ve gone through their share of controversy, finding the spotlight as a media darling at some points, and more recently, as an eccentric liability, accused of misconduct, with a $200 million superhero studio franchise resting on their shoulders. Vanity Fair’s Julie Miller chronicles the twists, turns, and (many, many) surprises she found when she attempted to untangle Miller’s saga. 

Elsewhere in HWD, Reboot premieres on Hulu this week, hoping to fill a 30 Rock–shaped void in audiences’ hearts—but does it succeed? David O. Russell’s first movie—sorry, picture—since 2015’s Joy, Amsterdam, had its New York premiere last night, and according to the star-studded cast (Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington,and more) filming it was quite the experience. Celebrities like Tilda Swinton and David Beckham came out to pay their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II in person. Speaking of legends, Susan Sarandon unpacked her storied career with VF, saying it’s “a discouraging story for anyone who wants to be an actor,” though her bevy of accolades and iconic roles points to anything but.

Ezra Miller went from Hollywood’s promising Bright Young Hopeful to having their agency suggest they employ the services of a crisis PR team after accusations of misconduct and public erratic behavior. They even reportedly adopted their superhero role into a messianic self-perception, “claiming that the Flash is the one who brings the multiverses together just like Jesus,” according to a source.
