ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On September 10, 1813, U.S. Navy forces defeat British Royal Navy forces at the Battle of Lake Erie. Led by Oliver Hazard Perry, nine U.S. ships defeated six British ships, securing Lake Erie for the remainder of the War of 1812. That control removed the British threat to Ohio, Pennsylvania and Western New York. The victory also led to the recovery of Detroit and the defeat of a Native American confederation which had sided with the British. |
